My life is full of music. I love to listen and have something playing almost all the time (never had much desire to play, but I listen voraciously). I spend a lot of time keeping my collection organized and have wired the house so that I can have the same thing playing almost everywhere at the same time. Nothing seems to capture moods like music.
Once in a while I hear an old favorite at it hits me in a way it hasn't before. The connection is like a deja-vu--and leaves me momentarily breathless feeling like someone else has had the exact experience as me, often decades earlier.
I've been feeling tumbled lately and ocean wave images are churning in my skull. Colorado is definitely growing on me, but sometimes I miss the Northern Pacific Coast: the crashing waves, cold air, and smell of kelp--I think it's time for a trip and a quiet walk on the beach.
The water theme to me brings to mind the Talking Heads song and it came up in a recent conversation with a friend, so pulled up Stop Making Sense and gave it a fresh listen. 80's music is as about as close as I get to "classic rock."
The song, Once in a Lifetime (lyrics at the bottom), got me listening, but the long pause came from This Must Be the Place:
Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing
I got plenty of time
you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight
Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home - -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be . . . where I'll be
We drift in and out
sing into my mouth
Out of all tose kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Sappy, naive, nostalgic, romantic? Absolutely, but right now it feels right.

Here's what got me listening (exerpted from Once in a Lifetime):
And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful Wife
And you may ask yourself-well...how did I get here?
........
Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?
