I'm not a stereotypical father, uninvolved in my daughter's life. To me, fatherhood is equal parts love, joy, frustration and terror at being utterly responsible for another being. My sense is that I'm not alone, but it has been difficult for me to find dads with common interests and priorities who are interested in talking about parenting. I think there is a real a dialog gap—a need for connection and thoughtful discussion about the reality, the ups and downs, of fatherhood.
As a solo dad, I also want to hear from anyone who takes an active roll in their kids' lives. I hope that both mothers, fathers and even non-parents will share insights and strategies for bringing up happy, well-adjusted sons and daughters without losing a sense of self and sense of humor.
I often find that I am so swept away by stress and the hectic pace of 21st century life that I forget to take the time to enjoy a day outdoors or the pleasures of a quiet day reading. I'm interested how other solo dads have learned to take care of themselves in order to be better parents.
As I face a crumbling marriage and stare into the maw of middle age, I also want hear from people who have learned to leverage their own life-experience to beat back despair; how people avoid growing up; how to not take oneself too seriously; and finally to share strategies for shrugging off the paralyzing complacency of the daily grind, information overload, consumerism and endless television in favor of calmly making the most of each day.
In this spirit I launch this blog.
